The new childrens orchestra

About a month ago Santiago started a new orchestra with 20 enthusiastic children on violins and cellos. Today you will see small violin cases wondering around in the streets and hear scale exersises in every garden, house and social gathering.

At first there were around 30 interested children, but because of the lack of instruments and resourses we had to narrow it down to 20. The preliminary weeks were spent in theory and music games, but now they have started playing on their instruments.

Here is Abbey Hartman teaching them pulsation and rythm through clapping and stamping. Abbey is a MCC missionary from the United States.

Fatima Mendia is the longest standing teacher the school has had and is unfortunately leaving Santiago after Christmas. We hope to be able to afford a new teacher, but at the moment our budjet is too tight. Here she is teacheing the second group of children. The children age from 7 to 12.

Nothing can describe properly the enthusiasm and will that is to be seen in these children. Some of the show up half an hour before practice just to be able to see their teachers play or to get help tuning their instruments just so they can practice again. They come every day in the week and in the afternoons you can hear the sound of small violins vibrating throught every home in the village. What a scenery!
